I am so with you on this. Whenever I look at any cook book (in fact, any reference book), the first thing I do is look at the index. So many of them are done badly and don't cross-reference. So if you want a broad bean recipe, but they put Feta & broad beans under Cheese, you totally miss it. The importance of a good index should never be underestimated. I've not bought books because the index was minimal/bad.

I do get some recipes off the internet and have a folder I put them in. Not only do I cross-reference my index, but I put my index... at the front!
